High blood pressure: Two helpings of this food a day could lower risk of the condition

High blood pressure, diabetes and obesity all fall under the medical term metallic syndrome (MetS) and are associated with greater risk of heart disease. But research carried out by scientists at McMaster University in Canada has suggested how these could be avoided – by eating full fat milk and cheese.

Previous advice from experts has urged adults to avoid full fat dairy products in order to stay healthy.

But the new study now suggests theses foods could be good for you.

The study involved 140,000 people from 21 countries and was conducted over nine years.

Questionnaires were used to assess participants’ diets over the duration of a year.

A serving of milk or cup of yoghurt was considered 244g, a slice of cheese 15g and butter 5g.

The researchers wrote in a BMJ journal: “Higher intake of whole fat (but not low fat) dairy was associated with a lower prevalence of MetS.”

They also hope their findings will help inform worldwide health initiatives to combat serious health problems.

Study author Balaji Bhavadharini said: “We report that intake of dairy products, especially whole fat products, is associated with lower prevalence of metabolic syndrome and its individual components at baseline, and a lower risk of hypertension and diabetes during follow-up.

“If our findings are confirmed in sufficiently large and long term trials, then increasing dairy consumption may represent a feasible and low cost approach to reducing metabolic syndrome, hypertension, diabetes, and ultimately cardiovascular disease events worldwide.”

The main causes of high blood pressure

It’s not always clear what causes high blood pressure, according to the NHS, but certain things can increase your risk.

You’re at an increased risk of high blood pressure if you:

  • Are over the age of 65
  • Are overweight
  • Are of African or Caribbean descent
  • Have a relative with high blood pressure
  • Eat too much salt and do not eat enough fruit and vegetables
  • Do not do enough exercise
  • Drink too much alcohol or coffee (or other caffeine-based drinks)
  • Smoke
  • Do not get much sleep or have disturbed sleep

The health body advises: “Making healthy lifestyle changes can help reduce your chances of getting high blood pressure and help lower your blood pressure if it’s already high.”

How to prevent and lower high blood pressure

Lifestyle changes that can help prevent and lower high blood pressure include:

  • Reduce the amount of salt you eat and have a generally healthy diet
  • Cut back on alcohol
  • Lose weight if you’re overweight
  • Exercise regularly
  • Cut down on caffeine
  • Stop smoking

Some people with the condition may need to take one or more medicines to stop their blood pressure getting too high.

How to find out if you have high blood pressure

Because the condition doesn’t usually present any symptoms, the best way to find out if you have high blood pressure is to regularly check your blood pressure.

Blood pressure is recorded with two numbers – the systolic pressure (higher number), which is the force at which the heart pumps blood around the body, and the diastolic pressure (lower number), which is the resistance to the blood flow in the blood vessels.

High blood pressure is considered to be 140/90mmHg or higher, or 150/90mmHg or higher if you’re over the age of 80.

Ideal blood pressure is usually considered to be between 90/60mmHg and 120/80mmHg.

You can check your blood pressure at home with a home blood pressure monitor if you’re unable to go to your GP surgery or local pharmacy.

Coronation Street spoilers: Ed Bailey arrested in heartbreaking misunderstanding?

Coronation Street viewers still have a lot to learn about the Bailey family as they only arrived in Weatherfield last summer. Now, as each character is being delved into more deeply, patriarch Ed (played by Trevor Michael Georges) will be the victim of racist abuse by his employer. As he resists defending himself, he eventually feels compelled to fight back but will he land himself in trouble over his decision?

The family of four landed back on the cobbles last June and have quickly settled into their new life on the ITV soap.

It soon emerged one of the family members was hiding a big secret about their identity after James (Nathan Graham) revealed to Bethany Platt (Lucy Fallon) he was gay.

His brother and dad had been trying to set the pair up but James was forced to tell the truth to the unlucky-in-love character.

However, it was months before he found the courage to tell his mum Aggie (Lorna Laidlaw) and older brother, with one bridge still left to cross.

When he finally revealed he was gay to Ed, he initially rejected his son and there has been a rift between them ever since.

However, Ed will endure his own ordeal over prejudice when he is faced with his new manager’s racist remarks at the Bistro.

Ed has recently been completing work at the eatery after it was sold to Ray Crosby (Mark Frost) earlier this year.

With finishing touches underway, the pair soon inform Ray they have completed their handiwork but the owner has a nasty surprise in store.

Van Der Valk: ITV viewers left outraged by series finale ‘Where’s the rest?’

ITV drama Van Der Valk came to the conclusion of its three-part mini-series tonight in a dramatic finale which nearly saw the titular character, Piet Van Der Valk (played by Marc Warren) meet a grisly end. Luckily, he managed to weave himself out of trouble, with fans wanting more of the rebooted police drama. However, many were left asking where the rest of the series was after it ended after just three episodes.

Tonight dealt a tense ending which saw a shoot out where junior police officer Cloovers (Elliot Barnes Woode), managed to save Van Der Valk

After a gun was pointed at Van Der Valk, his colleague cleverly managed to shoot the target from out of site, keeping them both unharmed.

After the event, Van Der Valk asked: “First time?” as his colleague nodded in confirmation.

He added: “There’s never a good time to start. Thank you,” as the hardened detective showed his softer side.

Tonight’s episode of SAS Who Dares Wins, focused mostly on reality star Joey Essex and Paralympian Lauren Steadman who were partnered up for this episode’s challenges.

It quickly became clear the two were more interested in competing against one another than working together.

Scenes showed them being scolded by the DS and it still remains to be seen if they can work together going forward.

But, tonight it was Yasmin Evans turn to leave the show after failing to meet any of the team’s expectations.

Neighbours spoilers: Sonya Rebecchi ‘replaced’ in heartbreaking twist as Toadie moves on

Sonya (played by Eve Moray) was the beloved wife of Neighbours stalwart Toadie (Ryan Maloney), with the pair having their fair share of troubles over the years. As things started to get back on track for them, the mother-of-two discovered she had stage-four ovarian cancer and lost her life in heartbreaking scenes on the Channel 5 soap last year. The late character’s husband has been unable to move on, even though he was tempted to give in to his rekindled feelings for ex-wife Dee Bliss (Madeleine West) who returned to Ramsay Street months after his wife’s death. The pair agreed it wasn’t the right time for them to explore their relationship, but when she turns up in Erinsborough again in upcoming scenes, will she replace her ex-husband’s late wife?

Great Big Lockdown Survey: Tell us what life’s like for you by answering THESE questions

Although Dee never met Sonya, it was her twin sister Andrea Somers (also Madeleine West) who wreaked havoc for Toadie’s wife whilst she was still alive.

The schemer impersonated her identical sibling, who the Ramsay Street favourite presumed was dead, and tricked him into bed, leading to the birth of her son, Hugo Somers (John Turner).

Last year, her evil mother Heather Schilling (Kerry Armstrong) turned up in Erinsborough under the alias of Alice Wells and forged her way into the Rebecchi household as the couple’s new nanny.

In an attempt to drive the husband and wife apart, the sinister character poisoned Sonya and left her for dead.

Despite surviving the ordeal, it was from this the symptoms of her cancer were masked, therefore making the illness more advanced by the time she was diagnosed.

With the anniversary of her death being marked earlier this year, could she now be replaced by the daughter and sister of her rivals?

  • Neighbours spoilers: Elly Conway ‘murders’ beloved Ramsay Street star?

The drama kicks off later this month on UK screens when Dee pays her sister a visit in prison, with Andrea desperately wanting to see her son, Hugo.

Soap spoilers have revealed this sequence of events will lead the beloved character to return to Ramsay Street and reunite with her ex-husband.

However, the sweet moment is short-lived when discussion of her sister arises and as the father of the child, he tells his ex-wife her twin will not have any form of access with their son.

Knowing how much distress her sibling caused and wanting to take Sonya’s widower’s mind off things, the kind-hearted Erinsborough favourite takes him on a fishing trip.

BACK BRITAIN’S BRAVE NHS HEROES – CLICK HERE NOW

It seems the plan does the trick as the pair connect on more romantic love, given they were married once before Dee was “killed off”.

Once they arrive back at the Rebecchi house, it seems the pair get swept up in the moment as they share a kiss.

Toadie is ecstatic at the development, with his ex-wife even suggesting she will move back to the area so they can pursue a relationship.

In the back of his mind is Sonya, however, as the father-of-two wonders if he can really move on from his late wife and if she would be a replacement for his children’s mother.

Sister-in-law and Sonya’s best friend Dipi Rebecchi (Sharon Johal) airs her concerns about how the children will feel about Dee moving back to Ramsay Street.

The character was previously worried about Toadie moving on back when he was reunited with his ex-wife last year and she was one of the reasons he didn’t jump back into things too quickly.

Realising there is some animosity, the returning character tells Dipi she has no intention of replacing the children’s mother.

In the ensuing struggle Leo ended up dead and his mother, Michaela Turnbull (Fiona Allen) is convinced Whitney murdered him and kidnapped the EastEnders resident in a bid to make her confess.

Emmerdale spoilers: Belle Dingle’s future with Jamie Tate ‘confirmed’ – here’s why

Belle (played by Eden-Taylor Draper) has been led to believe she and Jamie (Alexander Lincoln) will end up together after months of hiding their secret relationship from the rest of Emmerdale village, what with the lover promising to leave his wife, Andrea (Anna Nightingale). Unfortunately for the pair, it seems their chances of living happily ever after could be dashed as the vet’s other half caught the pair kissing in the woods earlier this week. Upcoming scenes on the ITV soap will see her with daggers at the ready as she plans to ruin her love rival. However, with all the drama set to come, it seems the forbidden lovers might just have a future together.

Great Big Lockdown Survey: Tell us what life’s like for you by answering THESE questions

Back in January, on the night Graham Foster (Andrew Scarborough) was murdered, the too young vets sought comfort in one another and viewers discovered they’d slept together through flashback scenes.

It seemed this might have been a one-off whilst Jamie was contemplating whether to divorce his wife after finding out his daughter, Millie Tate (Willow Bell), could have been fathered by the deceased character.

In the weeks after their steamy rendezvous, it quickly became clear the pair had feelings for one another and stole the moments they had together to continue their affair.

After getting back with Andrea, the cheating husband tried to get rid of any temptation of straying away, even trying to get Belle fired from the surgery.

However, with the love rats unable to keep their hands off one another, it seems this storyline could be leading to them becoming official, once they’ve got his wife off their backs.

Symptoms of blood cancer: The sign in your sleep that could signal the deadly disease

Blood Cancer UK states that over 250,000 Britons are currently living with the condition. How do you know if you’ve got the disease? The answer may be the sign in your sleep.

There are different types of blood cancers, each having different symptoms, treatments and prognosis.

Lymphoma affects white blood cells – called lymphocytes – which are an important part of the immune system.

This type of blood cancer can lead to night sweats that soak your clothes and bedding.

  • Lung cancer symptoms: The recurring health condition

For people with night sweats, they wake up drenching wet – even if they slept in a cool room.

Blood Cancer UK informs the public that a common symptom of lymphoma is lumps.

Painless swellings may take place in the neck, collarbone, armpit or groin.

These are swollen lymph nodes (glands) located throughout the body.

Other symptoms of lymphoma include a fever and unexplained weight loss.

There are three main types of lymphoma, depending on how the cells are affected and how the cancer behaves.

One type is Hodgkin lymphoma, the other two are types of non-Hodgkin lymphoma: follicular lymphoma and diffuse large B cell lymphoma.

In Hodgkin lymphoma, the cancerous cells are called Reed-Sternberg cells.

When treated early, for the majority of people, Hodgkin lymphoma can be cured.

Follicular lymphoma is the most common “low-grade” (meaning slow-growing) type of blood cancer.

It isn’t usually curable, but the aim of treatment is to have people experience remission.

Remission is when the amount of lymphoma is significantly reduced, so that people can enjoy a good quality of life.

  • Lung cancer symptoms: The sound of your voice could be a sign

Diffuse large B-cells lymphoma (DLBCL) is the most common “high-grade” (meaning fast-growing) type of blood cancer.

Most people will be able to go into remission, but others may need further treatment.

There are more rare types of non-Hodgkin lymphoma, one being Waldenström macroglobulinemia (WM).

WM is slow-growing and affects plasma blood cells. Then there’s Burkitt lymphoma.

No matter the type of blood cancer, scientists are unaware of what causes the DNA structure in blood cells to mutate.

However, risk factors have been identified. These are:

  • Age
  • Sex
  • Ethnicity
  • Family history

  • Some health conditions and treatments

These risk factors can vary between the different types of blood cancer.

In general, the older you are the more at risk you are of developing blood cancer.

This is simply because time allows for more mutations to occur within the body.

Unlike other cancers, lifestyle factors – such as diet and exercise – has little effect on your risk for developing the disease.

However, leading a healthy lifestyle can help reduce a person’s risk of developing many other diseases.

Beat The Chasers: ‘Unbelievable’ Bradley Walsh stunned as contestant wins £100,000

The ITV show sees budding quizzers take on up to five of Britain’s brightest quiz brains with the hope of winning a substantial amount of money. This evening’s show saw two players successful but it very nearly didn’t happen for contestant Jean this evening, who won huge prize money right at the last second of her game.

Great Big Lockdown Survey: Tell us what life’s like for you by answering THESE questions

Beat The Chasers has been on every day this week as the new series comes as the newest offering from its original format.

The series is different from the 5pm version in that all The Chasers are on-screen at the same time.

Players are tasked with answering a run of questions to try and build up a prize fund before they take on the quizzers.

Tonight saw another batch of hopefuls step up at the podium and one contestant scored big time after bagging £100,000 in very tense circumstances.

  • Paul Sinha health: Chase star reveals life-changing diagnosis

The show was full of drama tonight as it turned out Paul Sinha knew not one, but two of the contestants this evening.

One player, Belle, had been a contestant on The Chase seven years ago and failed to win £40,000 in a solo Final Chase.

Paul noted there were two reasons why Belle had failed to win the jackpot, telling her: “My episode of series six, she’d have won 40,000.

“Seat two got his last question wrong and secondly, I was better than her in the Final Chase!”

Belle had a good run and decided to take on all five Chasers for £100,000 but soon fell behind after slipping up on one question.

After Belle was player James, who Paul knew from his stint on Mastermind but he didn’t manage to beat The Sinnerman and the other Chasers tonight.

As the series drew to a close, there was one more player up to have a stab at winning a big sum of money.

Jean told host Bradley Walsh she was a retired teacher and now worked as a magistrate as well as training her dog.

She decided to take on all five Chasers after reminding the host “you’re only on here once” and subsequently had the chance to win £100k.

Against all the odds, Jean pulled it off and won with just one second remaining on her clock.

Bradley couldn’t believe it and neither could those watching at home, with one writing on Twitter: “Bl**dy hell Jean… that was tense! 1 second to spare #BeatTheChasers.”
